Who are the days of the week named after?

Question #29346. Asked by bobo bob.

    Stew

In Latin based languages they're often named after the planets - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. In English some of the planets have been ousted in favour of Nordic gods: Tiw (Tuesday), Woden (Wednesday), Thor (Thursday) and Freya (Friday).

I would dispute the planet bit. It was surely the gods after whom both the days and the planets were named.

The Latin names for the days of the week were indeed based on the planets. In those days, there were seven known planets, including the sun and moon, which were considered to be planets. (The Earth was not considered to be a planet, of course).
