I am trying to remember the name of this American author, who I think lived around the late 1800's and wrote many 'rags to riches' stories. Can anyone jog my memory?

According to the Oxford Companion to American Literature: 'He wrote about 130 popular books for boys, almost all fiction and all based on the concept that a struggle agianst poverty and temptation inevitably leads a boy to wealth and fame. His most famous hero was in the Ragged Dick series (begun in {1867);} the Luck and Pluck (begun in 1869) and Tattered Tom (1871) were next most popular. He also wrote lives of self-made statesmen.
