During the Civil War, an organization called the United States Colored Troops was established May 22, 1863 and allowed the recruitment of black men into the military as volunteer units. After the Civil War, on July 28, 1866, Congress passed a bill called the Army Organization Act. This bill established the first peacetime African American units. Six regiments were authorized under the act, four infantry and two cavalry. Each unit, of about 1,000 men, was placed under the leadership of Cols. Benjamen Greirson and Edward Hatch. The two mounted units were organized into the 9th and 10th cavalries. These units became known as the 'Buffalo Soldiers.' There are several theories about the name's origin, but according to Grierson, the soldiers acquired the name during their campaign against Native Americans. The Native Americans observed the soldiers' courage and fearlessness, the same traits they found in the buffalo. Plus, they thought the soldiers' hair resembled the manes on the heads of the buffalo. http://wwwext.tinker.af.mil/pa/archive/20010216/Buffalo%20Soldier.htm
