Did the great motorcycle racer Barry Sheene die?

Question #30113. Asked by Hot Rod. (Mar 18 03 1:10 PM)

Yes, very sad. A great character, an ambassador for the sport of motorcycling, a great competitor and an all round good guy.
I met him several times in the 1970's, had a tour of him racing motorhome and a glass of pink champagne with him.
Caught him once pulling his leathers back on (up!), wide cheeky grin on his face, as he was coming out the back of a Dunlop tyre van (between races) with his future wife Stephanie who was in a considerable state of undress. A chick in the slicks!
I remember his mum and dad were very friendly and easy to chat with also.
He survived 2 massive accidents, neither of which was as a result of any mistake he had made. Either would have killed most men and yet he returned having been rebuilt a bit like the Bionic Six Million dollar man.
Not many characters in the racing or sporting world anymore and a few like Barry would improve the image so much.
    R.I.P.
