Why do whales beach themselves?

It's also reckoned that military sonar and low frequency communications play havoc with the whales' navigational systems and communications. See New Scientist - can't remember which one, sorry.

Friar Tuck says: No one knows for sure why whales beach themselves, but some scientists suspect that beaching occurs when a sick whale (and those socially bonded to him) becomes confused and lands on a beach.
