Some species of sharks and rays have a membrane, the 'nictitating membrane' that can close over the eye to protect it (birds have a similar membrane). It is particularly noticeable in some sharks as, when they feed, the membrane sweeps across the eye protecting it from debris or from damage by the struggling prey. http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/database/Biology/9610/b00659d.html
