Toothbrushes with bristles originated in China about A.D. 1000 and were used with a tooth powder made from soap beans. (Ancient Inventions by Peter James and Nick Thorpe, 1994, p. 36) The first synthetic toothbrush was Dr. West's Miracle Tuft Toothbrush. It was manufactured by the E.I. Dupont de Nemours and Company and was first sold in September 1938. (Famous First Facts, 15th edition, p. 271) http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/library/adult/adult_toothbrush.htm
