From Hutchinson's encyclopedia: 'D-Day is military jargon for any day on which a crucial operation is planned. D+1 indicates the day after the start of the operation.'

Although Norwich is correct, the D originally served as an emphasis for the word 'Day'. In France, 'D-Day' is known as 'Le Jour J'.

You may be right mochyn, but looking through 'Recently answered questions' I see that this was originally asked under #11931. Some of the answers (including those from the legendary Brainy Blonde) support the 'D stands for day' theory. A quick Google under 'Le Jour J'+'La guerre' shows that the literal translation exists, which does seem to lend it some credence.

Not only was it D Day, but the actual time was H Hour and M minute. Very original, and designed to put any spies off the trail.
