The word robot has only been in English since 1923 when the Czech writer Karel Capek's play R.U.R. was translated into English and presented in London and New York.
R.U.R., published in 1921, is an abbreviation of Rossum's Universal Robots; robot itself comes from Czech robota, 'servitude, forced labor,' from rab, slave. This means that the film has to be after that date, and the first robotic film was 'Metropolis' in 1926.
If we accept that the question refers to robot-like machines, then Gegusse et l'Automate (The Clown and the Automaton) in 1897 was the first film.
