But did James Potter really die? There are certain clues that he didn't. In the film, there was no sign of him in the sequence which showed Harry's mother being killed and Rowling was very particular about this. In the fourth book, an apparent ghost came of JP came out of Voldemort's wand, but not at the right time, as if he been killed, but not at the time we were told. So what really happened?

read the seventh book if you want details read the seventh Harry Potter book.
On Halloween Voldemort unlocked their door James did not have his wand so he was killed right away by Avada Kedavra(killing curse; worst of the three unforgivible curses), but Lily ran upstairs with Harry and tried to baracade the door Lily then put Harry in the crib, faced Voldemort, and threw her arms wide Voldemort gave her a chance to live by telling her to move aside(this was a request made by Snape) she refused so he killed her using Avada Kedavra He tried to use the same curse on Harry, but it did not work, because Lily gave her life for her only son.
My reference is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows chapter seventeen Bathilda's Secret pages 342-345 american hardcover edition
