ALBANIA http://www.1upinfo.com/country-guide-study/albania/albania44.html Among ethnic Albanians are two major subgroups: the Gegs, who generally occupy the area north of the Shkumbin River, and the Tosks, most of whom live south of the river. The Gegs account for slightly more than half of the resident Albanian population. Ethnic Albanians are estimated to account for 90 percent of the population. The Gegs and Tosks use distinct {dialects;} there are also linguistic variations within subgroups. Well into the twentieth century, ethnic clans exercised extensive local authority, particularly in the north. Didn't know you were still here! Gegs and Tosks are the two 'tribes' that make up the Albanian people. Historically warlike, and not getting on very well with each other. No sign of them wanting to split the country, though. Albania is just below Yugoslavia and just above Greece, and just across the sea from Italy. Get your atlas out! Mar 29 03, 11:15 PM
