The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered between 1947-1956 in 11 caves (5 by {Bedouin;} 6 by archaeologists)on the upper northwest shore of the Dead Sea. The area is 13 miles east of Jerusalem, and is -1300 ft. below sea level (Jerusalem is +2400 ft. above sea level). http://www.uncc.edu/jdtabor/dssfacts.html

In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd found 7 scrolls in jars in a cave above Khirbet Qumran. Bedouin means an Arabic desert-dweller. It's any of the Arabic, nomadic peoples occupying the desert regions of Arabia and North Africa, now becoming increasingly settled.
