First world means the developed Western World, with democracy and freedom of rights. Second world means developed in the sense of industry, but without decmocracy and human rights. The classic example of the second world was the USSR (Russia and all those other countries) during the reign of communism. Third world is undeveloped or developing. Since the fall of communism in Russia, people think that there are no more 2nd world countries, but in fact one sixth of the world's population still lives in a developed country with no democracy and very little in the line of civil rights: I'm talking about China. China is the 2nd world now.
