    There were four Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but how many short stories were in these four?

    This question makes no sense.
    There were 4 novels and a load of short stories which originally appeared in the Strand magazine and then were published under thinkgs like THe Adventures of etc.

    There were indeed 4 novels but these did not contain any short stories. The 56 short stories were published in 5 other books (and as MibMob says they were first published sperately in 'The Strand Magazine'). A full list of the stories can be found http://www.sherlockian.net/canon/index.html
