Where do moles on your body come from, and why do you get them?

Everyone has moles, and some people are born with them. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, moles are caused by an abundance of pigment cells in the skin. They usually start out small and flat and may become raised and grow as time passes. Or, they may not change at all, and sometimes they go away after several years. They are usually brown in color but may also be pink, tan or black. Most moles form within the first 20 years of life but occasionally they show up later in life.
