The pigment used for tattooing is stored in a special kind of skin cell, known as a macrophage, which is normally responsible for removing foreign objects, such as these pigments, from the body. However, the types of pigments used cause the macrophage to 'freeze' or become ineffective, so the cell does not remove itself in the normal way.
