    Does candy cause tooth cavities?

Question #31925. Asked by okta. (Apr 19 03 6:29 AM)

    Candy contains much sugar.

Eating sugary foods frequently is one of the main causes of dental caries.

Refined carbohydrates, mainly sugar, can cause tooth decay. Plaque converts sweets and carbohydrates into acid which dissolves the tooth's surface causing dental decay.

Dental decay depends on the amount as well as the freqency of eating sugar.

People consume sugar by adding it to foods and drinks or by eating chocolate and sweets. In addtion much sugar is often taken by consuming sweetened foods and drinks (e.g. tomato ketchup, baked beans, flavored yogurt, fizzy drinks)

Feeding a baby with artificial milk is one of the main causes of dental caries as it contains a large amount of sugar.

If a person wishes to eat between meals, he/she should avoid sweets and instead eat snacks like fresh fruits, vegetables, and plain yogurt.

A pregnant woman is also liable to get dental caries and periodontal diseases as a result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. So she should take care of her nutrition, avoid intake of sweets between meals and to follow proper oral hygiene.

Once the surface enamel has been penetrated bacteria invade the softer inner part of the tooth, called the dentine.
