Although his commencement point of the 'procedure' in the painting seems unorthodox, he continued with fame and success and today a body part is named for him. Who is it, who was the painter and the painting, and what is the body part?

After witnessing his father kill a man, he travelled to spread the spirit of self-sacrifice, in order to pay for his fathers' crime by teaching others the benefits of being a hermit. His body was found 5 years later in his cell. About 15 years later his tomb was opened and his body stolen. Who is it and what body part still remains today?

This 17th century painting is at the height of controversary over a missing body part. The original was once engraved by another artist in its mirror image. A second copy was made not long after, but inside another painting, that is, a painting within a painting. Both copies have this body part exposed, whilst the supposed original, in the London National Gallery doesn't, which has caused concerns that what they have is a fake. Which painting is it, who painted the original and what one other discrepancy appears between the copies and the 'original'?
