The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends the following: 1. Halothane: This is probably the most commonly used general inhalation anesthetic used as a euthanizing agent in veterinary medicine. 2. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an excellent agent (gas) to euthanize adult rodents, but not neonates (baby rats, baby mice, pups). 3. Sodium Pentobarbital is an intermediate acting barbiturate that is used to euthanize dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ferrets, non human primates, swine and other large animals. 4. The use of ether is not recommended in DLAM's facilities The above is supported by the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine Carbon monoxide chambers are still widely used in the United States to kill unwanted animals, most of them strays picked up by animal control. http://www.saveourshelters.com/taxpayer_funded_chambers.htm Sodium pentobarbital is a drug, a barbiturate, which is used primarily to euthanize dogs and cats. members.rogers.com/anmartin1/cvm.html Once I held a dog so that a vet could euthanise it by injection, because the owner couldn't face her dog dying in front of her eyes. It was such a sad event because this was a very handsome animal and was unaware of its fate. I am still filled with sadness and guilt when I think the event and in a way how I betrayed it. The animal calmly and painlessly ceased to live. No struggling - no pain. A very peaceful demise. If an animal is to be euthanised, this is a painless way.

They put a mask on the dog, like an air mask, and inside is a kind of gas. It makes the dog sleep, but never wake up. The dog doesn't feel any pain after though. My dog got put to sleep:'(
