Are British police required to read a person their rights before they arrest them?

Question #31972. Asked by Miranda. (Apr 20 03 2:13 AM)

    Stew

Yes. The words changed a few years ago, and what they have to say to you now is:
'You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you fail to mention when questioned anything you later rely on in court.'

If the police arrest you, you must be informed that you are under arrest and why. The police should also give you the caution:

'You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention now, anything you later rely on in court. Anything you do say will be given in evidence.'
