    From where comes the term 'soda jerk?'

    A soda jerk is someone who makes a living by jerking, or pulling, sodas at a lunch counter, the name coming from the jerking motion required to open a tap.

    They make ice cream sodas (floats), phosphates, and fizzies. The soda jerk would fill the glass with ice cream, and then dispense the soda or seltzer water by jerking down on the handle and releasing it when the glass was full.
