Vitiligo Although doctors do not know what causes the process the cells that make pigment in the skin, called melanocytes, are destroyed (National Institutes of Health). Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder. In people with vitiligo, the immune cells, which normally fight infection, attack the melanocytes and kill them (American Academy of Dermatology). As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body (National Institutes of Health). Vitiligo appears to be genetic, and it affects all races equally, usually appearing before age 40. About 1 to 2 percent of the world's population, or 40 to 50 million people have vitiligo. In the United Sates, 2 to 5 million people have the disorder (National Institutes of Health). http://www.divinityinmotion.com/vitiligo.html
