Friar Tuck says: The Domain of Lights' or 'L'Empire des Lumieres', was done by Magritte in 1950, 17 years before his death in 1967. In this painting, Magritte uses his typical style of two realist images painted together to form a mysterious, surreal image. The bottom half of 'The Domain of Lights' is painted in shadow, with a street light casting just enough light over a house to make it visible. The reflection of this scene can be seen in a pool of water, which is located in front of the house. The top half of the painting is a scene of the sky in bright daylight, with white clouds floating through the blue. The silhouette of a tall evergreen towering above the house contrasts the bright blue of the sky. This is a good example of surrealism, and exhibits Magritte's extreme talent. I will not try to analyse or explain the symbolism that these objects represent, because Magritte himself looked down on the critics who tried to give a reason for his paintings. He said that the ideas just came to him and he did not know or want to know what they could possibly mean.
