The Epic of Gilgamesh is reckoned to be: http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byform/mailing-lists/exlibris/2001/01/msg00152.html. There were books like this well before the Bible was written down, and versions of some of them, like the story of Ut Napishtim, even got incorporated into the Bible (in this case as the story of the Flood).
