The story goes that Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion, prayed to God about the true church, and was told that he had been chosen to restore the true Christian church on Earth, which had been lost until then. The Book of Mormon was translated from 'Reformed Egyptian' heiroglyphics into English by Smith, aided by a pair of magic spectacles. The plates were handed back to an angel once the translation was complete.
