They claimed to be the followers of a mythical Captain Swing, and they are therefore known as the Swing rioters or the Swing gangs. The name 'Swing' probably derives from the 'swing' of a threshing flail: like the Luddites in manufacturing industry, the Swing gangs saw machinery (in particular the threshing machine) as a threat to their livelihood. What happened to a Swing rioter depended on exactly what he was found guilty of, but according to Hutchinson's Encyclopaedia 19 of them were hanged and more than 500 were transported.
