Where is the Isle of Wight?

Question #32729. Asked by Marcher. (Apr 29 03 11:01 PM)

It sort of sits under Hampshire, really. Down the bottom of England in the middle, so to speak. Noted for the Cowes Regatta. (Cowes is a place name that means - cows. They were sandbanks that looked like - cows.) Not noted for very much else that I can think of, except Osbourne House, former residence of Queen Victoria. Someone come up with something more famous - please.

If you are after famous things about the I.O.W., did you know that iIn 1876 Bell demonstrated his telephone to Queen Victoria who ordered a line from Osbourne House in the Isle of Wight to Buckingham Palace in London. This would have carried the first overseas call. http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/ttm/telhistory2.html

The Island's resident population is around 120,000 - 68,000 in Medina Borough and 52,000 in South Wight. Yet, it is said that if the entire population of the world stood shoulder to shoulder, they would all fit into the Isle of Wight - but only just! http://www.invectis.co.uk/iow/facts.htm

Rutland is the smallest county - 'The Island' as it's known is a county, but also relies on Hampshire for much of it's administration - it used to anyway.

Famous for Carisbrooke castle - Osbourne House - Alum Bay with it's multi-coloured sandy cliffs - dinosaurs remains and Jimi Hendrix!

Rutland is only the smallest county for half of the year, the Isle of Wight is smaller whenever the tide comes in, so for half the day, therefore half the year.

Trust me on this, I'm (sadly) from the IOW.
