In fact, the real Maria von Trapp has a minor role as an extra in the movie - one which she got as a condition for allowing the movie to be made.

I'm a nut about references, and kerry's no longer works. Here's an interesting book, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers," written by Maria herself. Read the comment by one whose mother knew Maria personally. My father heard them sing in Vermont long before the play or movie was made.

Wikipedia has a salacious tidbit at sharp variance with Maria's own story of being a reluctant and naive bride as told in the above book.
