Matthew 13:55 says 'Is'nt this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

Siskin is correct. 'Joses' is used in the King James - He is known as Joseph in the NIV and other modern translations.

The RC church teaches that when 'brothers' are refered to in the Gospel this indicates followers - Jesus was an only child. A number of Protestant churches disagree with this however, and agree with siskin...

....that same passage also says Jesus had sisters - but if we are being really pedantic then they were actually only half brothers and sisters. Agree?

the rc church usually takes the view that james, joseph, judas and simon (from mark 6) were cousins of Jesus. while no-one is sure, the church is adamant that Jesus had no actual brothers or sisters.

According to the Bible, Jesus had brothers and sisters. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there are other articles of faith outside of the Bible which have been handed down over the last two thousand years. One of these is that Mary did not have any other children because she never slept with a man. The Protestant faiths believe that only what is in the Bible is the truth, so they take the statement about brothers and sisters at face value.
