In the United States, what is the difference between a bar and a saloon?

I'd have said that a bar would be much less luxurious than a saloon. At the extremes, a bar might have bare floorboards with a sprinkling of sawdust and wooden stools or similar to sit on. A saloon would be carpeted and have comfortable padded easy chairs etc... In England, pubs (public houses) often have a bar and a lounge with the above distinction between them to a more or lesser degree. I've not seen it recently, but in the past, drinks usually cost a little bit more if you bought them in the lounge and used the better facilities. May 04 03, 12:24 AM
