Britain's newest national park, on the South Downs in Sussex, could be scarred by roadbuilding even before it officially opens, according to critics of a contentious scheme to improve transport links along the south coast. In a move which has already drawn derision from environmentalists, the south-east regional assembly is likely to rubber-stamp a construction plan today which includes a bypass round the medieval town of Arundel and a flyover just outside Lewes. The new roads will go straight through the South Downs, renowned for their beech woods, rolling hills and chalk landscape.
