What does the word 'Messrs' after two names actually mean, as in Messrs Jones and Smith for example?

Question #33162. Asked by Confused. (May 07 03 5:06 PM)

It's short for Messieurs - the plural of (French) Monsieur, which originally meant My Lord, but just equal to Mister now. The English use it as a plural for Mr. Common only in business or comic use, and not as common as it used to be either.
