The general opinion seems to be that the longest river in the world is the Nile. is the Nile. Hutchinson's Encyclopaedia gives the length of the Nile as 4,160 miles and the Amazon as 4,080. Whitaker's Almanack gives the Nile as 4,180 miles and the Amazon a 4,007. 'The Top 10 of Everything' (2001 edition) gives the Nile as 4,145 and the Amazon as 4,007. The differences seem to be due to different opinions about which headwaters are part of the river and which are tributaries.

The Nile is marginally longer, but the Amazon carries more water than the Nile and the next four longest rivers in the world put together!
