Who was under the wrong impression that his work on Joan of Arc was the best ever he had written: George Bernard Shaw, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, or Anatole France?

I'm not sure it's the wrong impression, but I believe you're looking for Mark Twain. http://marktwain.miningco.com/arts/marktwain/library/biography/bl_paine_bio_ch195.htm

Additional tidbit: Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent twelve years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell.
