ASKLEPIOS was the god of medicine and healing.
Born a mortal prince, Asklepios became so skilled in the art of medicine that he was able to raise the dead. This offended to the gods of fate, and so Zeus slew him with a thunderbolt.
Asklepios was placed amongst the stars as the Constellation Ophiuchus (the Serpent Bearer), his apotheosis into godhood. Some say his mother Koronis also received a place in the heavens as Corvus the crow.
The god was depicted as a bearded man holding a serpent-entwined staff.
He was closely identified with, if not identical to, Paion the Physician of the Gods.
