Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football, like rugger is for Rugby Football. (Both early C20th public school/Oxbridge slang.) Football is the name of the game in almost every English-speaking country (and plenty of non-English-speaking ones, although sometimes in translation such as Fussball in Germany...), and fittingly so, since foot and ball make contact on a regular basis. Soccer is merely the nickname of that particular variant (set of rules) of the game.
