What is the difference between a program and a programme?

    Question #33456. Asked by LOTRluver.

    Tabby Tom

Traditionally, 'program' is the spelling used in the US and 'programme' is the spelling used in Britain. So American TV companies put out programs and British companies put out {programmes;} in concert halls Americans will buy programs and Brits will buy programmes.

However, in the world of computers, 'program' seems to be the universal spelling for a sequence of coded instructions given to a computer, and it is used even by Brits who would use 'programme' in other contexts. Similarly, Brits usually have 'disks' in their computers but 'discs' elsewhere.
