Portuguese explorer Tristao da Cunha named Tristan de Cunha.
When sailing from Brazil to Cape of Good Hope, the Portuguese navigator Tristao da Cunha discovered the island. However he found it was impossible to land as the sea was tempesteous.

There are actually 3 islands in the group, the main one of them which is named after the explorer.
The islands were first sighted in 1506 by a Portuguese sailor, Tristão da Cunha, although rough seas prevented a landing. He named the main island after himself, Ilha de Tristão da Cunha, which was later anglicised to Tristan da Cunha Island.
