Authorities said counterfeiting poses no major threat to the economy. Of the {$620} billion in U.S. currency circulated worldwide, only a fraction of 1 percent is counterfeit. Authorities said that only one bill in every 10,000 is a phony. Nationwide, financial institutions and businesses turned up {$43} million in counterfeit money in fiscal 2002, down from {$47.5} million the previous year. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47153-2003May12.html
