Who was the most famous criminal in the American West? It's not Jesse James.

Question #33748. Asked by kitten. (May 15 03 11:49 PM)

    Jane

Butch Cassidy - the alias of Robert LeRoy Parker.

Just do a search for 'wild west outlaw' and his name will appear many times.

    Friar Tuck

Quite a few could fit the bill.

Frank Abagnale, Jr. is now very well known thanks to the recent 'Catch Me if You Can' movie. Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde and numerous other gangsters are equally as famous, but according to the following site, it is John Dillinger.

It depends on what sort of crimes they are remembered for and how far east your definition of west is. Those mentioned were predominantly involved in theft, extortion and the odd murder.

Timothy McVeigh killed 169 people. Albert DeSalvo killed at least thirteen and was known as the Boston Strangler.

The following site gives details of the famous western serial/mass murderers, David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy Jr., Luis A. Garavito, Ted Kaczynski, Angel M. Resendez and the worst of all and the most eastern of the westerners, our very own Dr. Harold Shipman. Police in England are currently investigating the deaths of Shipman's 62 patients, who authorities fear may have killed as many as 300 of the people he treated during his 24 year career.

Henry Starr, Billy the Kid, the Cherokee Kid, Butch Cassidy, etc., were all more famous than Jesse James in their time. In fact, for a long time Frank James was much more famous than was his little brother.
