Question
#33971. PUZZLER
asks:
Why is it that it's good to score under par in golf but it's bad to be 'under par' in anything else?

Because 'par' is an average (or base line in the stock market). If you've scored less than the average for that hole in golf, you've done well. If you're feeling worse than average, you're under par in health and that ain't good. Apart from that, if you're under Par you might be buried under a small Cornish port. (The jokes get worse - I warn you now!)

The Par or Standard Scratch Score in golf is the regulation number of shots a Scratch or zero handicap golfer should complete a round in. To be under the Par Score in golf is to be better than that. In most other things Par is an average to be below Par means to be under the average and therefore not a good score/result/performance (Conversely) Above Par is also an an expression to mean - to excel at something.
