The main difference between 'diet' versions of soft drinks and 'regular' ones is their sugar content. Most diet alternatives contain no sugar - This is replaced by an artificial sweetener. This used to be saccharin, but this is now believed to be unsafe by some, and has largely been replaced with a slightly better-tasting alternative, aspartame. In most cases, the regular versions, which do contain sugar, taste much better, though they are not usually recommended by the health-conscious. A diet soda does indeed contain fewer calories, but unfortunately this does mean that taste is sacrificed.
