    Question #34049. mochyn asks:

Since rabbits are not well liked in Australia, people want to replace the EASTER BUNNY with what native animal?

The bilby (a relative of the bandicoot).

may i say that while wild rabbits are a problem in regional areas, my understanding of the reason for the suggested change to easter bilby was simply a cultural one. just as we have FINALLY managed to shake the european/american based roast dinner with all the trimmings fiasco at christmas (in 100 degree heat) we are also trying to stamp other holiday celebrations with an australian flavour. notice how australia day and anzac day are being promoted much more than in years past in order for us to begin to look to ourselves for our culture - not oversees..... (one of the disadvantages of being such a new country....:) there has already been much talk of dropping the queens birthday holiday and replacing it with something more relevant - and many are agreeable - i suspect it will happen sooner rather than later, irrespective of the monarchy/republic debate....
