An assassination is just a planned murder, it doesn't have to be a important person
    anyways,
how exactly do you measure the importance of something or someone?

The term 'assassination' is strictly reserved for political figures. For example, a governor, Senator, mayor, President, etc. is assassinated (Ex. JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.) However, anyone else would be murdered- (Phil Hatman was murdered).

As a leader of the Civil Rights movement, King was a political figure. You don't have to be elected to government or local office to be a 'political figure'. Other examples of 'non-elected' political figures could include Gandhi, Mandela, Rasputin, Chandra Bose and many others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr. etc
