What is light, what is it made of, how do we know, and could you trap light (theoretically) forever in a mirror ball, and would it ever slow down or change its speed, and how do we guess that?

Question #34212. Asked by student. (May 23 03 12:06 AM)

Light is waves, like radio waves or micro waves. Various people have done experiments to discover this-including Newton. Light cannot change its speed-even time needs to adapt so that can be the case. If there was a source of light in a mirror ball it would be trapped there, but it would also be trapped if it was an ordinary ball.

If the mirror ball mirrors were perfect mirrors, i.e. 100% reflecting, then I guess the light wave would buzz around in there for ever! But in practice at every reflection a little energy is absorbed by the mirror, so the light would fade away.

Light slows down when it passes through certain substances, eg. glass, so therefore it is theoretically possible to slow light down further. What is the slowest speed that scientests have gotten light to?

According to Einstein's theory mass expands as it nears the speed of light. Once an object reaches the speed of light, which cannot happen according to Einstein's theory, supposedly the mass of the object would reach infinity. With that said, why can people from 'Star Trek' travel faster than the speed of light?

Just heard on the news a lab in Switzerland has found a way to make light travel faster or slower than the speed of light or even stop, any truth to this?
