The practice of never reusing the name of a ship lost at sea is quite prevalent throughout the shipping industry. It is seen as a bad omen for any other ship of the same name. However, it is not the case throughout the industry. My husband is a marine engineer and has sailed on many ships belonging to many different companies. In particular he sailed with 'The Bank Line' for some years. It is a British company owned by the Lord Inverforth (or was at the time.) The company regularly launched ships naming them after family members and famous places. A few of their ships were lost over many years and ships with the same name were built and launched years later.
