Question
#34332. student
asks:
I live in NC. I found a mushroom growing on a piece of wood that I think may be a Chanterelle. The cap is creamy and becomes darker at the center. The stem and gills are whitish. They are 4 in a clump. The edge of the cap points upward. How can I be sure it is edible or not?

while i was growing up the rule of thumb was - if its gills were dark incolour they were fine - if light - forget it. this definition served us well through the years but in fact was not a very smart thing to do. if you read this website it suggests not eating anything that grows wild - some mushrooms are poisonous and some toadstools are edible....and there are hundreds of varieties.......probably good advice really.... http://www.aces.edu/Lee/newspaper/mushrooms.htm

I'm guessing NC is North Carolina student - so here's a mushroom site for your area. The rule is for any fungi - if in doubt - leave well alone! http://www.biology.duke.edu/fungi/
