The 1999 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica on CD-ROM gives a mid-1997 world population of 5,848,739,000, of whom 14,890,000 were Jewish. This means that Jews are 0.25 per cent of the world's population, i.e. one person in every 400 is Jewish. Of all Jews, about 40 per cent were living in North America.
