Who comes up with the official names for hurricanes and tropical storms?

traditionally it was the meterologist who identified the storm. these days i beleive they have a list of names at the ready based on the phonetic alphabet for storms as they are identified. see this site for the origins of naming hurricanes after people - particularly women and politicians - a practice that actually started down under. (you certainly knew if this guy didnt like you....:)
Some storms are remembered for generations and set the standard against which other storms are judged. Let's see how many of these "super storms" you can recognize.
