    Question #34590. Juan Gonzalez asks:

Is not the costume worn by Morris dancers, the national costume of England?

    mochyn

the costumes worn by the Welsh and Scottish lend a certain amount of pride and dignity to a memorable occasion, which cannot be said for Morris dancers, they look like prancing idiots

I feel I must step in and defend the morrismen, as (strictly between us) I used to be one!

I should point out that we were not the namby-pamby morrismen with hankies. We each had a stout stick which we smacked against another's at the appropriate point of the dance.

Unlike the morrismen with sticks which feature on 'The Fast Show', we did not accompany the clashing of sticks with a loud shout of 'ARSE!'.

As one involved with Morris (North West Clog Morris), I would like to raise an objection to the question! There is NO standard Morris costume. People have been led to believe that the white trousers, hankies and bells ARE morris. Not so. This is the outfit for Cotswold Morris. Apart from this form, there is North West Clog Morris, English Longsword, Molly Dancers, Rapper and some others like the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance and the Lancashire Coconut Dancers. There is also Carnival Morris - totally separate from the others and usually called Fluffy Morris by us. Then there is Welsh Morris - sorry, mochyn, there really is. Quite often involved dancing with broomsticks. And there is the Anglo-Welsh Border Morris - very loud and spectacular. There is wide variation of costume within most of these groups, and no resemblance at all between Border and Cotswold in terms of costume. Visit a Day of Dance (or Weekend). If in the North West, visit Southport on the last Saturday in June or in Wales visit Conwy on the Saturday after next (something like the 14th?).
